..गाड़ी धीरे-धीरे सरकने लगी थी, उदय डिब्बे में चढ़ गया और जया का हाथ फिसल कर उदय के हाथ से छूट गया था। आज उदय अपना मन कड़ा कर सब कुछ पीछे छोड़े जा रहा था। जया को आज भी यह स्पर्श कितना याद आता होगा। क्या यह अहसास कभी भी दोनों का साथ छोड़ पाया होगा ? कुछ ऐसा भी होता है, जो शारीरिक अनुभूति से परे होता है। मन से, आत्मा से अनुभव किया गया, और जो उस अचेतन चेतना का हिस्सा बन जाता है, जो शरीर नष्ट हो जाने के बाद भी रहती है... हमेशा ....हमेशा। ‘प्रेम’ चाहे प्रेमी/प्रेमिका के प्रति हो या फिर देश के प्रति, यह एक ऐसा जज़्बा है जिसमें व्यक्ति कुछ भी कर गुज़रता है। ‘जाने कितने रंग पलाश के’ प्रेम की तीव्रता, देश के प्रति समर्पण और सैन्य जीवन की विषम परिस्थितियों को सामने लाता एक अनूठा उपन्यास है। देश के लिये मर मिटने का जज़्बा, प्रेमी के बिछोह में ज़िंदगी काटती प्रेमिका, शहीद भाई का इंतजार करती बहन, सैन्य जीवन की जटिल परिस्थितियाँ, और... दो प्रेमियों के मिलन की कथा समेटे है यह उपन्यास। इस उपन्यास में है देशप्रेम की ख़ातिर ज़िंदगी को न्यौछावर कर देने वाले उदय और उसकी प्रेमिका जया की कथा। कथा है यह उदय के बिछोह में ज़िंदगी भर का दुख झेलती जया की। वहीं इसी कहानी के साथ गुँथी है दूसरी प्रेम कहानी–देव और मृणालिनी की। इसमें भी परिस्थितियाँ वही हैं, पर अंजाम है जुदा। जिस तरह 1962 में चीन युद्ध के समय उदय की तैनाती सीमा पर थी, उसी तरह ऑपरेशन पराक्रम के समय देव की तैनाती सीमा पर होती है। जया की तरह ही मृणालिनी को भी उठाना पड़ता है बिछोह का दुख।... परंतु फिर भी इनकी प्रेम कहानी है उदय-जया की प्रेम कहानी से अलग। कैसे ? यह तो उपन्यास पढ़कर स्वयं ही जानें।1सर्दियों की शामें कितनी ख़ूबशूरत होती हैं, पर अक्सर कितनी उदास। आज फिर जनवरी की यह सर्द शाम मुझे उदास लग रही थी। मन में छुपे तूफ़ान को बाहर की ख़ामोशी टटोल रही थी। ऊपर से सब कुछ कितना शांत, कितना चुपचाप सा था, पर यही ख़ामोशी आज मन में दबे तूफ़ान को जैसे बाहर निकालने के लिए बेचैन हो उठी थी। बचपन से मैंने मम्मी को उदय मामा को याद करते देखा कम, महसूस ज़्यादा किया। जिन मामा को मैंने कभी अपनी आँखों से देखा नहीं, उनके बगैर, पर उनके साथ, हर वह इक-इक लम्हा मैंने जिया था, जो मम्मी ने अपने भाई के साथ जिया था। मामा के चले जाने के बाद, उनके बगैर हर वह लम्हा जो हमने जिया था, वह जैसे उनके साथ ही जिया। मैं ख़ुद से प्रश्न करती और ख़ुद ही उत्तर दे देती, ‘साथ न होते हुए भी उदय मामा मेरी ज़िंदगी का हिस्सा हैं, इक अहम हिस्सा।’ मुझे याद नहीं जीवन में कितने लोगों से मिली और फिर कब ये लोग बिछड़ भी गए। परंतु उदय मामा से मैं कभी मिली नहीं और शायद इसीलिए कभी बिछड़ भी नहीं पाई। उम्र के इतने सालों में हर वह लम्हा जो मैंने, हमारे परिवार ने जिया, उसमें कहीं न कहीं उदय मामा सदा हमारे साथ रहे हैं। जितना जीवन मैंने अपने साथ जिया, उससे कहीं ज़्यादा शायद उनके साथ। मम्मी का उदय मामा को याद करने का ढंग हमेशा से बड़ा अलग सा रहा है। सबसे ज़्यादा याद आने वाले अपने इस भाई की बात वह सबसे कम करती थीं। शुरू से ही वह उन्हें अपने ढंग से याद करती आई थीं–चुपचाप राखी पर भीगी आँखें पोंछते हुए या कभी रात-रात भर जागकर पुराने एलबम उलटते-पलटते, अक्सर पुरानी चिट्ठियाँ पढ़ते हुए या सिर्फ़ उनका नाम लेकर। आज भी मुझे घर का वह पुराना ट्रंक याद है। बचपन में मैं समझती थी कि उसमें तो बस निरा कबाड़ भरा है, और गर्मियां आते ही जिसमें रज़ाइयाँ वापस रख दी जाती हैं। मुझे यह सब हर साल देखने की आदत सी पड़ गई थी। साल में दो बार मम्मी उसे बड़े जतन से खोलती थीं। सर्दियाँ आने के ठीक पहले और सर्दियाँ बीतने के तुरंत बाद। सब रजाइयों को धूप दिखाई जाती। पुराना सामान निकाला जाता व झाड़-पोंछकर फिर रख दिया जाता। उस साल भी सर्दियाँ आने वाली थीं। तब शायद मैं ग्यारहवीं में पढ़ती थी। शाम के वक़्त मम्मी बडे़ प्यार से पुराना सामान निकाल कर बड़े सहेज-सहेज कर रखती थीं। पहली बार गौर से देखा, तो उसमें एक फ़ौजी रेनकोट था। उन्होंने उसे सहेजकर निकाला, दुलराया और फिर उसमें मुँह छिपा कर शायद कुछ पल के लिए रो पड़ीं। जब उन्होंने अपना मुँह ऊपर उठाया, तो उनकी आँखें भीगी हुई थीं। उन्होंने मुझे देखकर अनदेखा कर दिया और फिर सामान सहेजने लगीं। मुझे इतना समझ में आ गया था कि यह रेनकोट जरूर उदय मामा का है। बाद में एक बार उन्होंने ज़िक्र किया था, ‘मृणालिनी, जुलाई 1960 में जब उदय हमारे घर सागर आया था तो यह रेनकोट भूल गया था। यह रेनकोट हरदम मेरी ज़िंदगी का हिस्सा बन कर रहा।’ जैसे-जैसे साल बीतते गए, इसमें कुछ छेद ज़रूर बढ़ते गए, पर उदय मामा हर पल हमारे साथ जीते रहे। कैप्टन उदय शर्मा 1962 की चीन की लड़ाई में नेफा गए थे। से ला पास को बचाने के लिए वहाँ भारतीय सेना ने नवंबर 1962 में लड़ाई लड़ी थी। उदय मामा की पलटन को बहुत ज़्यादा नुकसान हुआ। तेरह में से दस अफ़सर कभी वापस लौट कर नहीं आए। मैं अपने नाना से बचपन से सुनती आई थी कि ‘मोर दैन हाफ ऑफ दि यूनिट इज़ स्टिल लिस्टेड एज़ मिसिंग इन एक्शन।’ मम्मी को आज भी उदय मामा का इंतजार है। वह इसी उम्मीद पर जीती आई हैं कि एक दिन उनका भाई लौटकर ज़रूर आएगा। ‘इंतज़ार में आँखें बहुत देर तक, बहुत दूर तक देखती हैं। उदय की राह देखते-देखते एक के बाद एक कितने लोग चले गए–तेरे नाना, तेरे पापा। अम्मा तो पहले ही ग़ुजर गई थीं। वैसे अच्छा ही हुआ, वरना वह क्या यह दुख बर्दाश्त कर पातीं ?’ आज भी मम्मी को उस मनहूस रात के एक-एक पल की याद है। सब कुछ जैसे उनकी आँखों के सामने से एक चलचित्र की तरह गुज़रता हुआ। कड़कड़ाती सर्दी से भरी वो रात। खाने के बाद सभी लोग साथ बैठकर चाय पी रहे थे। नाना फायर प्लेस के पास आरामकुर्सी पर बैठे थे। न जाने क्यों, पर माहौल में एक अजीब सा भारीपन था। एक अनजाना, अनदेखा सा डर सबके मन में समाया था। दरअसल उदय और उसकी यूनिट को गए कई हफ़्ते हो चुके थे। सभी यही दिखावा कर रहे थे कि सब कुछ ठीक-ठाक है, पर कोई किसी से बात नहीं कर रहा था। सामान्य दिखने का अनावश्यक यत्न ही पूरे माहौल को और असामान्य बना रहा था। तभी उस शांत, वीरान सी रात में, कमरे के हर दरवाज़े-खिड़की के बंद होने के बावजूद न जाने कहाँ से हवा का एक तेज़ झोंका सा आया और फायर प्लेस के ऊपर रखी उदय की तस्वीर एकाएक गिरकर चूर-चूर हो गई थी। नाना के पैरों के पास, उन टूटे हुए काँच के टुकड़ों के बीच, फायर प्लेस की गुलाबी लपटों में उदय मामा का हँसता हुआ चेहरा मम्मी को आज भी याद है। नाना के मन में उसी दिन वहम बैठ गया था कि उदय को कुछ हो गया है। वह रात-रात भर जागते रहते, एक सिगरेट से दूसरी सुलगाते हुए। घोर मानसिक तनाव से ग़ुजर रहे थे सभी। बहादुर को कहते ‘फाटक पर ताला मत डालो, उदय आएगा।’ मम्मी आज भी जब तब उन दिनों को याद करती रहती हैं। जैसे वो दिन कभी बीते ही नहीं। कैसा अजब माहौल था। उदय मामा के न आने का दर्द इन बीते तमाम सालों में सबको सालता रहा। मम्मी व नाना इसी दर्द को जीते और भरसक कोशिशों के बाद भी इसे एक दूसरे से छुपा न पाते। दिखावा यही करते कि सब ठीक-ठाक है। मम्मी तो पापा तक से अपनी व्यथा छुपाती थीं। वे हमेशा अकेली ही उस दर्द से संघर्ष करती रहीं। ‘बेचारी जया, उसके पास तो कोई रिश्ता भी नहीं बचा था अब उदय को याद करने का...।’ जया को याद कर बस इतना कह कर वह चुप हो जातीं। फिर उनकी यह चुप्पी कई दिनों तक चलती। जब उदय मामा का ज़िक्र करतीं, तो जया भी उन्हें सहज याद हो आती। उनकी चुप्पी को देख मैं सोचती रहती कि मम्मी ने कितना दर्द सहा है। शायद ही कोई देवी-देवता, पीर पैगंबर, दरगाह या मंदिर बचा होगा, जहाँ मम्मी ने उदय मामा की वापसी के लिए मन्नत नहीं माँगी हो। तमाम मन्नतों के धागे जो अटूट आस्था और विश्वास के साथ उन्होंने बाँधे थे, वह कभी खुले ही नहीं। आज भी वहीं बँधे होंगे, यथावत। समय के साथ इन धागों का रंग फीका तो हो गया होगा, पर यह बँधे होंगे अपनी जगह। आज तक वहीं पर। क्या वह गाँठें कमज़ोर पड़ गई होंगी ? क्या खोले जाने की आस में इंतज़ार करते-करते धागे स्वतः ढीले नहीं पड़ गए होंगे ?... कहाँ क्या कमी रह गई थी इस प्रार्थना में ? ...मम्मी की आस्था व विश्वास तो आज तक अडिग है। क्या उदय मामा उन वादों को भूल गए थे, जो वह सबसे कर गए थे ? क्या मेरे इन प्रश्नों का उत्तर किसी के पास था ? मैंने नाना को कई बार भावुक क्षणों में याद करते सुना था, ‘से ला पास तक पहुँचना क्या आसान था ?’ ‘14 हजार फीट की ऊँचाई और कड़ाके की सर्दी। चारों तरफ बर्फ़ ही बर्फ़ थी। हमारी फ़ौज के पास न तो सर्दी से बचने के पर्याप्त कपड़े थे, न ही अन्य कोई सामान और न ही पर्याप्त मात्रा में हथियार व गोला बारूद। सब कुछ इतना अप्रत्याशित था। अजीब अफ़रा-तफ़री का माहौल था। किसी को कुछ भी ठीक-ठीक पता न था। शायद भारतीय सेना लड़ाई के लिए तैयार ही नहीं था। ‘इन परिस्थितियों में भी मेरा उदय लड़ा और लड़ते-लड़ते...’ इतना कहकर हमेशा की तरह वह फिर ख़ामोश होकर दूर खिड़की के बाहर देखने लगते। अपने बेटे का इंतज़ार उन्हें अपनी आख़िरी साँस तक रहा।
